Weekend update and post race analysis

With two days down and two to go, it’s already been an eventful time for Ursa Major Racing. From strong performances to valuable learning experiences, our horses and team have been giving it their all.

Thursday: Tarlac Shows Promise for a Longer Trip

The week started with Tarlac, who put in a solid effort despite the race not quite going to plan. The early pace was quick, and with a sprint finish, the conditions didn’t entirely suit him. Both trainer Katie Scott and jockey Jason Hart have suggested stepping him up in trip, which looks like a promising move. Keep an eye on Tarlac when he tackles a longer distance in the future—there’s certainly more to come from him.

Friday: The Go North Series Finals Begin

Friday saw the Ursa Major owners head to Musselburgh for the start of the Go North Series Finals, with three runners in action.

First up was Punxsutawney Phil in the 4:25 race. Jockey Jamie Hamilton had outlined his tactics beforehand—get to the front and try to stay there, a strategy that had proven successful for the pair at Newcastle in February. Phil gave a tremendous effort, leading all the way until just before the line, only to be narrowly beaten into second place while carrying an impressive 12-stone weight. His determination made the whole club proud, proving he was well worth the wait following his comeback. See the closing stages in the video below at bottom of page!

Next, Restandbethankful took his turn. Following a similar front-running approach, Rocky set off at a strong pace, but as they turned for home, it became clear this wasn’t going to be his day. Post-race, jockey Sean Quinlan noted that Restandbethankful is a natural chaser, excelling over fences thanks to his impressive jumping ability. With this run under his belt after a long layoff, he’ll be primed for his next outing.

Looking Ahead: Ashington Takes Centre Stage

Next up is Ashington, a horse well-known to everyone at Ursa Major and a real favourite of everyone that knows him. last-time-out winner, he always gives his all on the track, making him a real yard favourite. At the time of writing, he’s priced at 8/1, and he heads into the race in top form. - Young jockey Paddy Barlow retains the ride after an excellent performance last time out, where he judged the pace perfectly and delivered Ashington at just the right moment. We’re hoping for more of the same today—fingers crossed for another strong showing!

Good luck to all owners and connections!
