Frustrating night for The Mackem Torpedo - but lots to look forward to in 2022

It wasn’t the end to 2021 we were all hoping for on Thursday night, with The Mackem Torpedo disappointing at Wolverhampton.

Hopes were high that his last two runs at Newcastle were leading to his first victory in the Battenberg silks to round the year off with a bang.

But a wide draw and an early bump saw his chances evaporate before the race truly got going and he was looked after by jockey Phil Dennis.

Phil said afterwards that the slightly deeper surface may also have played a part, while trainer Katie Scott also had him scoped post-race having coughed several times while being unsaddled.

But there’s certainly no reason to feel down as we head towards 2022 - with several new horses already in place to make their Ursa debuts and new trainers in the ranks as well - with Grant Tuer and Rebecca Menzies added to our roster most recently.

Grant has two yearlings for us in the shape of Fortuitous Star and Wreck It Ryley, while Rebecca has welcomed Mr Shady to her string.

Down south, Mike Murphy, who already trains Cityzen Serg for us has a yearling called Champagne Sarah; while club stalwart, Mark Walford is about to receive our new jumps mare Moonlight Glory.

She is only six and related to some very classy horses including her brother Port Stanley, who has some seriously smart placed form behind horses as good as Asterion Forlonge and Energumene. She loves proper winter ground so we can hopefully get her started sooner than later.

Amongst the familiar faces, Candescence is back in the yard and looking great after a break and flat and hurdles winner Battle Angel will follow next week, alongside Ghadbbaan, Who’s Ur Dandy and Mehraki Star.

As always, we have shares available to suit all budgets and we are happy to discuss what we have on offer if you drop us a line on the Contact Us button below.

Happy New Year to all our owners, trainers and their staff.
