Rebecca Menzies December Stable Tour

We have enjoyed a fantastic first year with Rebecca Menzies, with Melburnian’s win at Kelso in October the highlight.

Melanie has moved on to a career in the breeding game, but we have a really strong team at Howe Hills, with Cabinet Maker, Aclaim To Fame, Texas Boy and a Kessaar yearling colt all looking to make an impact in 2023.

Here, Rebecca talks us through where we are with our four hopefuls.

Aclaim to Fame

She loves her food and eats really well. We are careful with what she eats after a touch of colic. She has put on lots of weight and is ready to get going after Christmas. She has shown us plenty. She was the fastest two year old filly we had last year at home, so hopefully she will give us a good year. We brought her in a little early so she is a little ahead of schedule. She has been on the walker and she should be ready a little earlier than we thought.

Cabinet Maker

He is probably going to be a Spring horse. We will run him at Newcastle early in January, but I think he will be a nice dual purpose horse come Spring. He likes decent ground and I am sure he will do well for us. He needs a decent break probably and then bringing back after six weeks off. He isn’t showing any physical signs he needs a break, but he’s had plenty of action and will get one. He pulls out very fresh and he’s a bit of a character really. He’s a hardy hose who will run plenty through 2023 and he’s already won three and is on a winning mark again. The world could be his oyster over hurdles, he just doesn’t want winter ground.

Kessaar yearling colt

He’s just on a little break having pleased us in breaking in. We call him Danger Mouse here. He’s just been on the walker, giving him time to grow and have a holiday. We will get riding him again just after Christmas. He has done plenty of cantering before his break so it should be a case of cracking straight on. He’s bred to be sharp and early so we will get him out as soon as we can. He has enjoyed his break and he will be quick to come to hand. He has grown. He will be early, the Brockelsby would be an ideal starting point.

Texas Boy

He galloped nicely this morning and we try a new trip with him at Wolverhampton tomorrow. We will get Phil to drop him in and travel. We are going to go back to basics, ride him to get the trip and he is a very straightforward horse. His work is good and his bloods are better after a few of them got a cold. Fingers crossed for a step in the right direction tomorrow.
