On this Day: 27th July 2019...
It's the stuff of dreams isn't it? Winning once, amazing! Winning twice, outstanding! Winning three times on the bounce though, now that's a rare accomplishment. And so, on this day last year, that's exactly what Kodimoor achieved at Lingfield on a gorgeous summer Saturday evening.
It was a red hot day and the long, sweltering drive from Kodimoor's North Yorkshire base can't of been an easy one for our trainer Mark Walford. But, having spotted an opportunity to enter our northern raider, into a valuable race in leafy Surrey, it would prove the right thing to do.
So as our southern members gathered and Gok Wan made final adjustments to his DJ set, owners gathered around the parade ring and wondered, can Kodimoor make it three in a row?
Well we wasn't disappointed. Faithful partner Dougie Costello, arrived after hot footing it from Newmarket, especially for the ride. All was well and good in the stalls and Kodimoor broke well and was up with the pace from the off. Hurtling along the straight 7f, Kodimoor's only real challenger came in the form of Gary Moore's Master Poet inside the final furlong, but Kodimoor powered away in the final yards, to make the issue certain and to put himself and Dougie firmly into the Ursa Major Hall of Fame.
All that was left to do was to give Kodimoor a well earned pat, pick up the trophy and a welcome glass of champagne. Little did we know that At the Races's Bob Cooper would be lurking in the parade ring with TV camera in hand to record Dougie's and our owners thoughts on landing the three timer.
What an amazing day. Affordable race horse ownership gives you this type of opportunities and memories.
