CANDESCENCE: Candescence ran on Monday 15th June 2020 in the 12:50pm David Wildon Marching On Together Memorial Novice Auction Stakes at Pontefract over 6 furlongs. Candescence finished 1st out of 9 and won £3,493.26 in prize money. Candescence has been known to members for some time as a horse that has an awful lot of potential and she certainly showed that in this race. She came out of the stalls well and led after 2 furlongs. She and the eventual runner up Kraken Power pulled clear of the rest of the field 2/3 furlongs from home. She was headed over 1 furlong out but found more in the tank and kept on gamely in the last hundred yards to win by a head. She was receiving weight from the field, but this performance has already given her an RPR of 73 and the sky is the limit! Club members celebrated into the night after her maiden win and all options are on the table as to her next assignment.
There are some nice pictures and videos of Candescence available on the club Facebook page and Instagram channel since the race which have been contributed by partner owner John Craggs.
CLIFFTOP HEAVEN: Clifftop Heaven ran on Thursday 18th June 2020 in the 8pm Market Cross Jewellers Stores Now Open Handicap at Redcar over 1 Mile and 2 furlongs. Unfortunately, Clifftop did not have a great time of it and finished last of 13 runners, however there were many mitigating factors. Firstly, the ground turned against Clifftop at the meeting progressed, the ground changed from Good to Soft in a matter of hours due to heavy rain in the local area. Also, he attempted to jump the road part of the course and let out a squeal which Andrew Mullen was concerned was an injury, Andrew correctly took the right course of action and gave Clifftop an easy time after that being concerned for the horse’s welfare. All things considered Clifftop was up in class as well, so we can draw a line under this race and move forward without any concerns. Clifftop came out of the race without even having a blow so he will be out again very soon.
ILLUSTRISSIME: Illustrissime or “Dan” as the stable staff call him in Mark’s yard ran on Saturday 20th June 2020 in the 8:10pm Ripon, Yorkshire's Garden Racecourse Handicap at Ripon over 1 mile and 2 furlongs. Jason Hart took the ride on this occasion as Dougie was at Newmarket for Magical Max (one of Mark’s other horses in the yard). He finished 6th of 11 but was under 4 lengths away from the winner in a very competitive race. Like Clifftop Heaven, Dan was up in class and did have circumstances in the race which can be forgiven for his next appearance. Dan sweated up a bit at the start and got bumped twice (by the horse that finished 2nd) in the final 3 furlongs when trying to make headway. He did lack a little bit of pace at the end, but stamina is not an issue for Illustrissime. Club members are now discussing whether to get another flat run into Illustrissime or whether to send him over hurdles when NH racing resumes in July.
Candescence’s run has really created a lot of excitement and buzz for the whole club. This is a horse that could be very classy and certainly has a bright future. She will raise the profile of the club and Mark Walford as well. Mark Walford is a fantastic trainer who gives the club so much in terms of access, information and updates, we are grateful and lucky to have our horses with him.
